Juan Pablo is the Executive Director of AthenaLab. For 22 years he worked as a journalist becoming the International Editor of El Mercurio, director of El Mercurio de Valparaíso, editor and correspondent of The Associated Press in Mexico and Colombia. Its coverage in America, Asia-Pacific and other regions, includes elections, conflict zones, summits and interviews with important leaders. He has a Master's degree in Political Science and journalist from the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile. He also has formal studies in security and defense at CHDS and ITAM.
John Griffiths
Head of Security and Defense Studies
John is Head of Security and Defense Studies at AthenaLab. Former Army Officer. Bachelor of Military Science. M.A. in International Security from Georgetown University. Doctor in American Studies with a mention in International Affairs of the USACH. He has worked as a teacher at the Pontificia Universidad Católica de Chile, ANEPE and the Adolfo Ibáñez University on issues related to Strategic Studies, Security and National Defense. Additional studies in these fields at Harvard University, King´s College and University of Antwerp (UFSIA).
María Fernanda Muñoz
Project Manager
For 7 years she worked at the Center for International Studies of the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile (CEIUC), as an Analyst and later as Project Manager, in charge of developing and managing academic, research and extension initiatives on issues of international relations and transparency. , among others. She is a Political Scientist from the Pontifical Catholic University of Chile and a graduate of the Master of Political Communication from the Adolfo Ibáñez University.
Ignacio Mardones
Head of Development and Strategy
He was a naval officer for 37 years, where he held various positions, in Chile and abroad, becoming part of the High Command of the Chilean Navy. He is a graduate of the Naval Command course at Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island. His work in the Navy focused mainly on operational activities and in the field of education, where he held different positions, such as Director of the “Arturo Prat” Naval School for three years. He was commander of different units such as the patrol ship "Castor", the missile ship "Uribe", the frigate "Blanco Encalada" and the training ship "Esmeralda". Likewise, he was Director of Education, Commander-in-Chief of the First Naval Zone, and Commander-in-Chief of the Squadron, and General Director of the Maritime Territory and Merchant Marine.
Pilar Lizana

Pilar has a PhD in Government and Public Administration from the Complutense University of Madrid, a Master's in Political Science with a mention in International Relations from the PUC, a BA in Humanities with a mention in History and Journalism from the UAI. For more than 10 years she has held different positions in the public and private sectors. She has worked as a researcher in Freedom and Development and is a collaborating professor at the Adolfo Ibáñez University. Specialized in transnational threats, with a focus on drug trafficking, she has participated in courses and seminars at the William J. Perry Center for Hemispheric Defense Studies and the Asia Pacific Center for Security Studies in the United States.
Marcelo Masalleras

Former Chilean Army officer. Bachelor of Military Sciences. Graduated as a Staff Officer from the war academies of the Army, Chilean Air Force and the US Army Command and General Staff College, Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, USA. Master in Military Sciences from ACAGUE. M.A. in International Security from Georgetown University. He has held teaching activities at the Army War Academy and the Chilean Air Force, as well as at the West Point Military Academy in the United States, teaching classes in the departments of Military Instruction and Defense and Strategic Studies.
